When the paper web enters the presses it has a dry solids content of about 20%. In the press section, the web is then pressed between one or two felts in a number of press nips and the dry solids content sometimes increases to morethan 50%.
The function of a the press felt is to support the sheet and maximise the water removal.
The advantages to press the water out than to dry it out.
- Pressing is a more economic way to remove water than by drying.
- The paper properties are influenced.
- Increased paper production.
